There are a couple of ways to set up an internet connection on the Draytek. There is a quick setup Wizard which is available but this does not allow you to select the modulation type during setup. This would mean that you will still need to make further manual tweaks later on, therefore, we recommend that you skip the wizard and move straight on to doing a manual configuration for the connection.
1. Setting up the WAN ports:
From the menu on the left-hand side of the dashboard select WAN > General Setup from the menu. Please click on the this article for instructions on how to log into the device.
The screen above shows you a list of the 4 WAN interfaces that you can configure.
WAN1 – This is the DSL (internet) port on the router and can be used for DSL and VDSL broadband services via a PSTN (phone) line.
WAN2 – This is an Ethernet WAN port which can be used to connect to an existing network modem or router such as a Fibreline/EFM or an ADSL modem. It will connect to another router if in 'bridge' mode.
WAN3 – This is a USB WAN port and can be used to connect to a 3G/4G/LTE dongle. This is useful for back-up in case of any issues that you may experience with your internet connection
WAN4 – This is another USB WAN port (as above).
For the purposes of this guide we will only look at configuring WAN 1 which is where most users will be connecting their DSL internet service.
2. Configuring WAN port 1 for DSL:
From the WAN > General Setup page, click on WAN 1. You will be greeted with the following configuration page:
Enable: This will both enable and disable WAN 1. You need to make sure this is 'Enabled'.
Display name: Allows you to name the internet connection that you are setting up. Give this a suitable name to help you identify this connection from any others that you maty have (e.g Gradwell DSL).
Physical Mode: This displays either ADSL or VDSL depending on the connection type. This needs to be set as ADSL for standard Gradwell ADSL/Broadband services but VDSL if you are using Gradwell Superfast (FTTC) connection.
DSL Mode: You need to select the connection type here. ADSL for standard Gradwell ADSL/Broadband services but VDSL if you are using a Gradwell Superfast (FTTC) connection.
Physical Type: Se to 'Auto Negotiation'
DSL Modem Code: Leave this as 'Default'
Line Speed: Ignore this, this option will usually be greyed out.
VLAN Tag Insertion (ADSL): Se to 'Disable'
VLAN Tag Insertion (VDSL): This will need to be set to 101 for Gradwell Superfast (FTTC) connections.
Active Mode: Set to 'Always on'
3. Configuring the internet connection settings:
On the left hand side select WAN > Internet Access:
You will need to make sure to select PPPoE / PPPoA in the dropdown box next to WAN1.
To configure the details of the internet connection, select the 'Details Page' button that appears on the right of WAN1.
Click on the PPPoE / PPPoA tab and ensure that the connection is set to Enabled.
Modem Settings (For ADSL only): - You can ignore this section for Gradwell Superfast (FTTC) connections. Enter the following information for standard Gradwell ADSL/Broadband services.
Multi-PVC channel: Channel 1 (default)
VPI: 0
VCI: 38
Encapsulation Type: VC MUX
Protocol: You can use either PPPoA or PPPoE, I recommend you start with PPPoA.
Modulation: You should select the appropriate connection type here rather than use the multimode setting. When set to multimode the Draytek doesn’t always select the correct mode automatically, particularly with Annex M broadband services as Annex M will allow more upload than standard broadband services.
ADSL2 (G.992.3) – Please ignore
ADSL2 Annex M/J – Please ignore
ADSL2+ (G.922.5) – Regular ADSL 2+ service (Our ADSL lines use this setting)
ADSL2+ Annex M/J - Select this if you have specifically ordered an Annex M connection
PPPoE Pass-through: You can ignore this section. This is for advanced users who might want to set up the PPP session on another third party piece of equipment.
WAN Connection Detection: You can leave this as 'Default'
MTU: Set this option to 1492
ISP Access Setup:
Service Name: Set this to the Display name that you chose earlier (e.g Gradwell DSL)
Username: Enter the RADIUS username for your connection (provided by Gradwell)
Password: Enter the RADIUS password for your connection (provided by Gradwell)
Separate Account for ADSL: Leave this unticked
PPP Authentication: PAP or CHAP will do.
IP Address From ISP: You can ignore this for a basic internet connection setup
Fixed IP: Set to 'No' (Dynamic IP)
Default MAC Address: Leave as 'Default'
